Some of the greatest people in my life are through random encounters. I met Katie in 2005 while photographing a wedding in Vancouver. She was traveling from Australia and was a guest of a guest for the wedding. Sometimes you meet someone you and you instantly click. Katie is one of those people. We have kept in touch over the years and when I told her that I would be visiting her motherland this November, we planned a visit. Katie lives in Redcliffe, Queensland which is near Brisbane. After spending a few days in Melbourne, I flew to Brissy. I was very excited to meet Katie’s three year old daughter, Pearl. We went to Katie’s home where she had prepared an awesome tea party complete with chai and all the best Aussie treats: lamingtons, anzac bisquits + pavlovas.
Pearl was exactly as I imagined her to be: adorable, thoughtful + curious. She blew out the candle and saw purple + orange in the smoke. She asked us what we dream of. Then listened and questioned our answers. She asked about my baby girl (not understanding that she’s actually my niece) and told me about her stuffed Emu. She asks her Mum when he will become real again. I have only just met her and I know that I love her, this whimsical little three year old with curls like Li’l K and a deep, old soul.
Thank you for a perfect afternoon, Katie + Pearl (+ Katie’s Mum!). xo

Daniel - I would love to say it was the photographer who did a great job, but who can take a bad photo with the subject matter. Yes, my daughter is a beautiful miracle. (I am a very proud father)
